Brendan Rodgers has been filmed burning a Liverpool flag at Leicester’s training ground ahead of Saturday’s showdown with the league leaders. It will be the Irishman’s first return to Anfield since masterminding an unsuccessful title bid in 2014.
“I’m looking forward to it,” Rodgers told Soccer on Sunday. “Sometimes you have to burn a wee flag and the odd Steven Gerrard jersey to lay down a marker. I threw the photo of Joe Allen and myself on a tandem bike in Blackpool onto the fire too. That stung, but you have to make sacrifices at this level.”
“Next thing my phone rings, and it’s ‘The Welsh Xavi’ pocket dialling me,” added the former Celtic manager. “I don’t think science can explain a bond like that. I’ve told Charlotte, ‘I love you, but my soul belongs to wee Joe.’ It’s been separate bedrooms since, but as I say, this level is about sacrifices.”
Jürgen Klopp has admitted that this afternoon’s game has some extra spice.
“Brendan’s a cool guy,” the German told Soccer on Sunday. “But a kräp landlord. The downstairs toilet and the en suite are both backed up again. It’s like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but that Rodgers künt won’t send a plumber. It’s not a healthy environment for my family, and that’s how it is.”
“I like the house,” added Klopp. “But the 15-foot mural of Brendan and Joe Allen naked riding a unicorn over a rainbow is not cool. My wife does her best to tune it out, but the penises are at eye level. It’s not easy.”
