Gareth Southgate has reacted with relief to the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of the Euros. The England boss came under fierce media and fan pressure after omitting the defender from recent qualifiers.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pleased,” Southgate told Soccer on Sunday. “Problem solved, from my perspective. People say ‘Nobody likes to see a player get injured’, but that clearly isn’t true. I’m over the moon.”
“There’s a perception that I don’t think Trent is a good footballer,” said the 50 year-old. “Nothing could be further from the truth. I just think he’s a shit defender, that’s all. Can he improve that side of his game? No. I dare say he can’t.”
“Obviously we all wish Trent a slow recovery,” he added.
